I’ve been working on my current series of floral still lifes for a year and a half now. They’re distinct from what I’ve painted before in a few ways. I’m finding a lot of different shapes and colours and this has come about because I’m using a grid method. For those of you who have followed my work for some time, you know that I’ve always used a grid. I used to spend a few days drawing the image out on the canvas, and then paint the areas of my drawing.

Thirty five years ago, when I started painting still life, my biggest influences were painters such as David Hockney and Eric Fischl who are not even known so much for still life. I liked their style and contemporary approach.
